Delta Airlines Carry-On and Personal Item Guidelines

Each Delta passenger may bring 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item (such as a purse, laptop bag, or similar-sized item) free of charge. Your personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. If you plan to bring a roll-aboard or larger bag for the overhead bin, size requirements can be found here.

Note: Exceptions apply for travelers with an infant-in-arms and those with pets in the cabin.

Overhead Bin Assistance Please note that flight attendants generally cannot assist with placing items in overhead bins, except in specific cases. This policy helps keep everyone safe and reduces the chance of injury for crew members from repetitive lifting.

Carrying On a Personal Item

Below are approved personal items that you may store under the seat in front of you:

Approved Personal Items

• 1 purse, briefcase, small backpack, camera bag, or diaper bag
• 1 laptop bag (computers cannot be checked unless directed by security)
• 1 item similar in size to those listed above

Free Additional Items In addition to your carry-on and personal items, the following items are free to bring on board:

• A jacket and/or umbrella
• Food or drinks purchased past security
• Duty-free items
• Special items such as strollers, wheelchairs, child safety seats, or assistive devices (e.g., crutches)

Carry-On Size Restrictions

To ensure your bag can be safely stored in an overhead bin:

• Combined dimensions (L+W+H) must not exceed 45 linear inches (114 cm).
• Individual dimensions must not exceed 22” x 14” x 9” (56 cm x 35 cm x 23 cm), including handles and wheels.
• These size restrictions do not apply to small musical instruments that fit in overhead or under-seat space. See Carry-On Details

If your bag doesn’t fit, or if overhead space is limited on a full flight, a gate agent can assist you by checking your bag at the gate.

Delta Connection Flights
Due to limited space, Delta Connection flights (50 seats or fewer) allow only personal items on board. Carry-ons may be gate-checked at no charge, with a pink Gate Claim/Planeside tag attached, and will be returned to you upon deplaning.

What’s Allowed in Your Carry-On?

While most items are allowed in your carry-on or personal item, there are restrictions for certain items for safety:

Liquids, Gels, and Aerosols

• Containers must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less.
• Place all items in a 1-quart clear plastic zip-top bag.
• Place the bag in a security bin for screening.

Liquids, gels, and aerosols include beverages, creams, hair products, suntan lotion, and toothpaste. TSA makes special allowances for items such as medication, breast milk, and infant formula, which may receive a separate screening.

Duty-Free Items

Some countries allow you to purchase duty-free items, which are sealed in secure bags for travel. However, in countries without similar programs, you may need to check these items to avoid confiscation at security.
